Lake City E-Bike Accident Lawyers Who Put You First
Meldon Law has been helping injured Floridians for half a century. In that time, we’ve learned what injured people need most. They need someone who listens, explains things clearly, and calls them back.
That’s why we keep our caseload small. You deserve personalized legal representation. It gives us time to get to know you and build your case the right way. And if you’re not sure your injuries are serious enough for a bicycle accident lawyer to handle your personal injury claim, donāt be. Call us anyway. No question is too small. Our team is also bilingual, so language won’t stand in your way.
For an example of our case results, we recovered $3 million for a client who was hit by a semi-truck while riding a bicycle. Every case is different, and past results can’t promise future outcomes, but they show how hard we fight.
Why E-Bike and E-Scooter Crashes Happen So Often Around Lake City
E-bikes and e-scooters are more popular than ever, and so are the injuries. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found that ER visits for e-bike, e-scooter, and similar injuries jumped nearly 21% in 2022. The agency also counted 233 deaths tied to these devices from 2017 through 2022.
Columbia County roads can be especially risky. According to a May 2025 report from News4JAX, a driver hit two bicyclists on NW Lake Jeffery Road, killing one and critically injuring the other. Within 24 hours, Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported that a 78-year-old bicyclist died after a pickup hit him on US 441, from ABC affiliate WCJB-TV (Channel 20).
E-bike and e-scooter riders use these same roads every day.
Traffic adds to the danger. I-75 and I-10 meet just outside Lake City, bringing trucks and fast-moving cars onto local streets. Many crashes happen when drivers fail to yield, look at their phones, or speed. Others happen when riders go too fast on sidewalks and crowded paths.
What Florida Law Says About E-Bicycles and E-Scooters
Knowing how Florida classifies your device can help you understand your rights after a crash.
How Florida Defines an E-Bike
An e-bike has pedals that work and a motor below 750 watts. Florida law sorts e-bikes into three classes. Class 1 and Class 2 models stop helping you at 20 mph, and Class 3 models stop at 28 mph. Each e-bike should also have a label showing its class, top assisted speed, and motor wattage.
The state treats e-bikes like ordinary bicycles. You don’t need a license, registration, or insurance to ride one, and you can take it on bike lanes and anywhere a regular bike is allowed.
Where E-Scooters Fit Under State Law
Florida law calls e-scooters “motorized scooters.” They have no more than three wheels and can’t go faster than 20 mph on flat ground. Scooter riders follow the same rules of the road as cyclists, following all traffic laws. Like e-bikes, they don’t need a license, registration, or insurance.
Local Rules in Lake City and Columbia County
Cities and counties can add their own rules on top of state law, such as limits on sidewalks or minimum ages. It’s smart to check with the city or county before you ride. For more tips, read our free E-Bike & E-Scooter Safety Guide.
Who Pays for Your Injuries After a Lake City E-Bike Accident?
E-bikes and e-scooters don’t carry insurance of their own. That means money for your injuries has to come from somewhere else, and where it comes from depends on how the crash happened.
If a car hit you, you may be able to turn to:
- The driver’s bodily injury liability (BIL) coverage, which pays for injuries the driver causes in an auto accident
- Your household’s personal injury protection (PIP), which covers part of your medical expenses and lost wages following a car accident, as long as you get medical treatment within 14 days
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage, which helps if the driver has little or no insurance
When an e-bike or e-scooter hits a pedestrian or another rider, things look different. PIP usually doesn’t apply because no car was involved. Instead, money may come from the rider’s homeowner’s or renter’s policy, though some of these policies exclude e-bikes and e-scooters. In other cases, the rider may have to pay out of pocket. Your own health insurance may also help cover treatment while your claim moves forward.
If the rider is a minor, the parents may also be responsible. This can happen when parents let a child ride a device the child can’t handle safely, or don’t keep an eye on them.
Insurance in these cases is often limited. Our e-bicycle accident attorneys dig into every policy and every possible source so that nothing gets missed.
Building a Strong Case Against the At-Fault Party
Most of these claims come down to negligence. Simply put, negligence means someone was careless, and their carelessness hurt you. Our job at Meldon Law is to prove it.
To do that, our e-bike wreck lawyers gather:
- Police reports from law enforcement
- Statements from witnesses
- Video from nearby homes and businesses
- Photos of the scene and your injuries
- The damaged e-bike or e-scooter
When needed, our personal injury attorneys also work with experts who can piece together exactly how the crash happened.
You should also know Floridaās comparative negligence law could affect your claim. If you’re partly to blame, your compensation goes down by your share of the fault. If you’re found more than 50% at fault, you can’t recover anything.
Insurance companies know this law and often try to shift blame onto you to limit their losses. We push back with solid evidence.
Damages Available in an E-Bike or E-Scooter Injury Claim
Every case is unique, but you may be able to recover money for:
- Medical care now and in the future
- Lost income and a reduced ability to work
- Physical pain and emotional distress
- Permanent scarring
- Damage to your e-bike, e-scooter, or other property
If you lost a loved one in a crash, your family may be able to file a wrongful death claim.
Florida’s Deadline for Filing Your Claim
In Florida, you generally have a two-year statute of limitations to file an injury lawsuit with the local county courts. That may sound like plenty of time, but evidence can fade fast. Witnesses forget details, and video footage gets erased. The sooner you call, the better we can protect your case.
