Last Friday, October 17th, Gainesvilleās streets came alive in a burst of orange and blue for one of the cityās most beloved traditionsāthe UF Homecoming Parade.
What began nearly a century ago in 1925 as a modest celebration of school pride has grown into a spectacular event drawing more than 100,000 spectators each year. This yearās parade was no exceptionāa joyful showcase of Gator Nation spirit, creativity, and community.
Among the standout moments was the Meldon Law Circus Floatāa massive, colorful creation built entirely through the dedication of volunteers who poured their hearts (and plenty of paint) into making it unforgettable.
Behind the Big Top: The Making of the Meldon Law Circus Float
This yearās theme, āThe Circus,ā couldnāt have been more fitting for the energy of Homecoming weekendālively, colorful, and just the right amount of chaos.
āSometimes game day can be quite like a circusāchaotic and fun all the way through,ā said one of our volunteers, a proud UF alum.
For weeks leading up to the parade, volunteers came together after work and on weekends to cut, paint, and build. They faced everything from tight deadlines to light rain showers, but nothing slowed them down.
āI wanted to give back to the community and support a local business,ā the volunteer shared. āSeeing people come out to help, even despite the rainy weather, was my favorite part.ā
āIt was a little challenging to paint in the rain,ā they added, laughing. āBut it takes a lot of time and dedication, especially from those organizing it.ā
The final floatābold red and gold with playful circus detailsābrought smiles all along University Avenue. For many volunteers, it was their first time participating in the parade, making the moment even more meaningful.
āIt feels special participating this year because Iāve never done it before,ā they said. āI love doing things connected to UF, given Iām an alum.ā
The UF Homecoming Parade has long been a reflection of Gainesvilleās heartāa celebration that bridges generations of students, alumni, and families. Few know that the first parade featured horse-drawn carriages and high school bands, long before motorized floats became the highlight. Nearly a hundred years later, the spirit remains the same: pride, unity, and joy.
āWe love how this float reflects what Meldon Law stands forāheart, community, and resilience,ā said Carey Meldon, Managing Partner of Meldon Law.
The Greatest Show in Gainesville
As the crowds cheered, the Meldon Law Circus Float rolled byāa bright reminder that Gainesville thrives on community spirit.
Each wave, laugh, and photo taken along the parade route captured what makes this town truly special: people coming together, rain or shine, to celebrate what they love most.
The 2025 UF Homecoming Parade was a show to rememberāand for Meldon Law, it was a proud moment to be part of Gainesvilleās living tradition.
