Car Accidents Caused By Speeding

Speeding3

Going fast in a hot rod or sports car may seem like a fun way to spend an evening. Some drivers even race with others to see who can go the fastest. However, speed kills, and the statistics back up this claim. In 2019, 9,478 people in the United States were killed by speed.

Speeding has been an issue for decades. It accounts for nearly one-third of car accident deaths. Going faster is not safer. In fact, even if you are going the speed limit, you could be driving too fast for conditions. This is true in situations such as poor weather, poor lighting, and road defects. Many accidents happen at night when people go too fast in the dark.

Speeding is a serious issue that affects everyone on the road—not just the driver. If the driver loses control, they can get in a crash and injure passengers and occupants of other vehicles. They can also cause damage to light poles, trees, and buildings. If they crash, they may also injure animals in the road, such as deer.

Why Do People Speed?

What motivates people to speed? Drivers go too fast for various reasons, such as the following:

  • Running late. We’re busy with work, school, appointments, and children’s activities. Sometimes it’s hard to cram everything we need to do in one day. There are just not enough hours in the day and sometimes we make up for it by trying to go faster. This can backfire, though, and lead to serious accidents.
  • Traffic can really slow down a vehicle. To make up for lost time, a driver may become aggressive by speeding and changing lanes frequently.
  • Some people drive too fast and not even realize it. They may drive a sports car, listen to music, or talk to their passengers without knowing how fast they are really going.
  • Pressure from others. On the freeway, there may be pressure from other drivers to go faster to keep up with the flow of traffic. This may cause some drivers to go out of their comfort zone and go faster than they normally would.
  • It feels good. Many drivers enjoy the rush of going fast, especially if they have a high-performance vehicle. Speeding just feels good to them. They may even feel more aggressive.
