Lake City Sex Crime Attorneys

Sex crimes differ slightly from other criminal offenses in Florida. While a conviction for a sex crime will still result in lengthy prison terms and high fines like other violations, you will face other consequences if you are convicted, as well. After a sex crime conviction, people carry a social stigma around with them, as well as a permanent criminal record. Convicted individuals also sometimes have to be listed on the sex offender registry, which is a matter of public record. A Lake City sex crime attorney will prepare the defense you need to retain your freedom.

Types of Sex Crimes in Lake City

There are a number of sex offenses listed under Florida law, ranging from misdemeanor offenses to felonies. No matter the type of crime though, they are all taken very seriously. Sex Crimes and the Sex Offender Registry

If you are convicted of a sex crime, you may have to appear on the sex offender registry. Anyone can look this registry up online and access certain information about you, including where you live. Not everyone convicted of a sex crime in Florida have to appear on the registry, but many do. If this is a condition of your sentence or release, you will have to meet many requirements, which include:

  • Inform local police of your presence in any county in the state,
  • Inform the police if you plan to travel to other counties in Florida, and
  • Update your personal information annually, including your occupation and place of employment, vehicle information, residential information, email addresses, and phone numbers

If you are planning on traveling outside of the state, on either a temporary or permanent basis, you must also inform authorities of your plans. Failure to meet the requirements as part of being listed on the sex offender registry comes with very harsh penalties on its own. For a first offense, you will have to wear an electronic monitoring device for at least six months, and that time is extended to two years for a third or subsequent offense.
