As the school year and football season are about to begin the need for Ubers in the Gainesville area is about to skyrocket. An unfortunate reality of this increase in Ubers is that they’re likely to be involved in accidents around town. All members of the community should be aware of Uber’s insurance policies as they may affect you in different ways depending on the situation. Here are some of the most common situations you may find yourself in:

I’m a Passenger in an Uber Involved in an Accident

If you’re riding as a passenger in an Uber and there is an accident, Uber’s insurance will cover your injuries. Uber’s liability coverage is up to $1 million per incident for bodily injury or property damage to passengers. This means that if your Uber driver causes an accident, Uber’s insurance has got you covered. If another motorist causes the accident, for example if someone else runs into your Uber, their insurance will be on the hook for any injuries you may sustain. If the individual who hits your Uber is either uninsured or doesn’t have enough insurance to cover your injuries, then Uber will once again step in and cover up to $1 million per incident.

I’m a Driver Involved in an Accident With an Uber

If you’re driving your own vehicle and you’re involved in an accident with an Uber, the insurance implications are slightly more varied. Most of these variations boil down to whether the Uber driver has a passenger, is en route to pick up a passenger, or is simply driving around. First and foremost, if the accident is your fault, it will be your insurance that is on the hook.

If the accident is the Uber driver’s fault and they are not currently active as an Uber driver, which is indicated by whether they have their app on or off, then their personal insurance will be used to cover any losses. If the Uber driver is active, but not carrying anyone and not en route, then the driver’s personal insurance will be used unless the driver doesn’t have insurance that covers $50k injury, $100k total, and $25k property, in which case Uber will cover up to that amount. If the Uber driver is en route or carrying passengers then the $1 million per incident liability coverage will cover any bodily injury or property damage to third parties, such as pedestrians and other vehicles.

Most situations as they apply to Uber drivers have been covered above, except coverage regarding the Uber driver’s personal vehicle. Uber’s website explains that while carrying passengers or while en route to passengers there is contingent collision and comprehensive coverage. Uber qualifies this coverage by saying: “if [an Uber] driver holds personal comprehensive and collision insurance this policy covers physical damage to that vehicle that occurs during a trip up to the actual cash value of the vehicle, for any reason, with a $1,000 deductible.
