Halloween Fun Can Put Your Child at Risk for a Pedestrian Accident

As the 31st of October approaches, many of us in the Ocala area are helping our children prepare for the traditional Halloween activity of trick-or-treating. While dressing up in costume and going from door-to-door collecting candy can certainly be fun, it also exposes kids (and adults) to a risk of involvement in a pedestrian accident.

Fortunately, there are ways that parents can reduce the risk that their little ghouls and goblins will get hurt this Halloween and practice pedestrian safety.1 These include the following:

  • Be sure that your child is accompanied by a responsible adult
  • Avoid trick-or-treating in high-traffic areas
  • If possible, trick-or-treat during daylight hours
  • Choose a trick or treating route that minimizes the number or times you cross the street – for example, go all the way down one side of the street, cross, and return on the other side
  • Avoid costumes that are particularly dark and give children flashlights or glow sticks to enhance their visibility to other drivers
  • Never allow children to walk out into the street from between parked cars
  • Avoid masks that can affect visibility

What to Do if an Accident Does Occur

Unfortunately, accidents can happen even if you do everything possible to keep you and your child safe. Here are some of the steps that you should take after an accident in order to protect your and your child’s rights:

  • Wait for the police to arrive and obtain a copy of the police report
  • Have your child undergo a thorough medical evaluation, even if his or her injuries seem relatively minor
  • Obtain contact information from anyone who may have witnessed the accident
  • Keep detailed notes about the way in which your child’s injuries affect him or her on a daily basis
