Types of Recent Defective Hip Replacement Units

Posted on Oct 17, 2011

Many types of hip replacement implants have been recalled due to defects.  Below is a list of the more common brands that have been recalled for defective reasons.

  • Zimmer Duron:
The company stopped selling its hip implant in 2008 after finding from doctors that the device was failing in many of their patients and thereby requiring a second hip implant surgery.
  • Sulzer Orthopedics: The company recalled 30,000 units of its Inter-Op Shell Hip Implant in December 2000.  Due to a manufacturing error, a lubricant caused contamination that prevented the patient's bone from adhering to the implant, causing pain, discomfort, and numerous other complications for many patients.  Many patients required a second hip replacement.
  • Stryker Trident: The company recalled in January 2008 two of its hip replacement products, the Trident Acetabular PSL Cup and the Trident Hemispherical Cup.  Complaints included patient reports of the implant migrating or moving from its place, implant parts breaking, severe pain, discomfort, audible squeaking, and other issues.
  • DePuy Orthopaedics: The company recalled in August 2010 two of its own hip replacement products, the ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System.  Due to a design defect, patients who received these devices have suffered complications including fractures around the site of the implant, loosening or dislocation of the device, and metal debris from the devices that may spread into the bloodstream.

If you have a hip implant that was made by one of the above companies and have experienced difficulty with the implant, contact a medical malpractice attorney who can refer you to a doctor to care for your injury as well as advise you about being compensated for your injury.
