On December 7, 2005, Tiffany Olson and her boyfriend Dustin Wilder were involved in a fatal crash on U.S. 19 in Manatee County, Florida. The motorcycle they were riding was hit by another vehicle, and both Tiffany and Dustin were thrown many feet from the motorcycle. Tiffany died immediately, and Dustin died shortly thereafter. Their parents were not notified until hours after the accident, and even after the notification, they could not locate their children.
Tiffany's mother, Christine Olson, devastated that she was not notified about the fatal crash earlier and trying to prevent others from going through the same ordeal of not knowing, started a campaign to have the emergency contact numbers printed on a person's driver's license or identification card. The information could not be printed directly on a driver's license. However, Christine and State Representative Bill Galvano from Bradenton District 68 were able to have the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) include the emergency contact information in the Driver and Vehicle Information Database (D.A.V.I.D.), a database used by law enforcement only for emergencies like this.
Those who have a Florida driver's license or a Florida identification card can input two emergency contacts at https://www6.hsmv.state.fl.us/dlcheck/findcustomer. Then if they are involved in a serious or fatal traffic accident, or even in a non-traffic-related incident, the law enforcement officials will access D.A.V.I.D. by scanning their license or ID card and notify their emergency contacts.
