Last weekend, on March 20 and 21, 2009, three people died in two crashes in Central Florida. They were not wearing seat belts.
The first crash occurred on I-75 in Marion County at 2.30am on March 20. A truck driver lost control of his truck, which overturned. The driver and three passengers were not wearing their seatbelts and were ejected from their vehicle. While the driver died at the scene, the passengers were transported to the Shands Hospital at the University of Florida where one of them also died. The two backseat passengers suffered non life-threatening injuries.
In the second crash, a driver, traveling on I-20 in Putnam County, near Palatka, crossed over into oncoming lane and crashed into another vehicle at 1.15am on March 21. The driver was wearing a seat belt. He was transported to Shands. The other vehicle overturned from the impact. Its driver who was not wearing a seatbelt died at the scene, and its passenger, wearing a seatbelt, was transported to Shands.
The investigation is still underway.
