Gainesville is not the only local city work to install red light cameras to help alleviate the problem of red light running in the area. Starke's Police Chief is currently in the process of evaluating a new proposal for red light camera put in place at a number of major intersections in the city, including lights on U.S. 301 at the intersections of S.R. 16 and S.R. 100.
Any driver who fails to stop at a red light, waiting until the light is green to proceed through the intersection, as required by Starke's new city ordinance, will be fined $150 by a ticket which will be mailed to those identified by their license plate number by the unmanned cameras. The violation will be confirmed and mailed with 10 days of the infraction.
Unlike the Gainesville ordinance, which has a higher fine for higher numbers of violations, the Starke ordinance only has one set fine. However, violators are able to appeal their ticket by proving good cause at a hearing, which could include claims that the vehicle was stolen or that not stopped at the light was necessary for the safety of others.
If the appeal is denied or if no appeal is filed, the fine must be paid within 30 days in order for the violator to be able to obtain any city permits or licenses, including valuable building permits to local Starke residents.
