In April, 2013, two young men were tragically killed in a single vehicle crash on Florida’s roadways. The two men were Bryan Lorenza Blunt, 22, and Cornelius Lamar Rawls, Jr., 19. The men were traveling with Eddie D. Woods, 18, and Demontay Drantail Billups, 22, at the time of the crash. The car that they were driving was approaching a curve in the road when the driver lost control of the vehicle. It slammed into a tree, leaving Rawls and Blunt fatally injured at the accident scene. Blunt had been driving the car at the time of the crash.

Also injured in the accident were Billups, who was the brother of Rawls, and Woods, who was the cousin of Blunt. The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the crash. It was reported that the car split in two, scattering debris from the wreckage.

The men had been traveling from a night club called Cloud 9. The driver, Blunt, reportedly was inside the club for approximately 30-40 minutes. Billups released a statement that he did not see Blunt drinking and did not smell any alcohol on his breath after leaving the night club.

On Monday, April 8, Billups was released from the hospital. Both of his hips had been fractured in the crash. Billups further reported that he was the only man wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred.

A recent Florida dog attack has prompted local officials at Manatee County Animal Services to schedule euthanizations for two dogs. Some concerned citizens have initiated a legal battle to try and stop the euthanizations; however, Manatee County attorney Jim Minix argues that the dogs present a danger to the public. He notes that the attack was severe and could have caused death.

During the incident, two Australian Shepherds named Buck and Bill attacked a 13 year-old-boy who was riding his bike at the time. The two dogs had escaped from the window of a home in Lakewood Ranch Community on Christmas Eve 2012. They roamed the area until coming upon the boy, when they charged at him.

According to Minix, the boy was attacked simultaneously by both dogs, making it impossible for him to fend them off or escape. He tried to run away two times and was chased, knocked down, and dragged by the dogs. In total, he received seven severe bites. The bites were so graphic that they were not shown in television reports. The teenager has since undergone multiple surgeries.

Following an investigation, Buck and Bill were sentenced to death. Their owner appealed the decision but subsequently lost. He, along with attorney Colleen Glenn, argued that the age of the dogs combined with the fact that they had never been involved in an attack before indicates that the sentence of death is an overreaction. In response, Minix states that Florida law clearly states that severe dog bites call for dogs to be euthanized.

On Friday, February 22nd, a Gainesville car accident shut down the westbound lanes of Archer Road for approximately two hours. The car wreck occurred around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Gale Lemerand Drive and Archer Road. Two vehicles were involved in the crash.

Officers from the Gainesville Police Department responded to the crash to direct traffic and conduct an investigation. Spokesman Officer Ben Tobias reported that one of the vehicles involved in the accident was a white Ford Expedition, driven by Jerome L. Williams of Gainesville.

The other car involved in the collision was a red Ford Mustang, driven by Coral P. Swiger of Belleview. Her husband, Ricky Burl Swiger, also of Belleview, was a passenger in the car. All three individuals suffered injuries as a result of the crash.

According to the Gainesville Police Department accident report, Mr. Williams was travelling west on Archer Road at a high rate of speed when he rear-ended the red Mustang. The Swigers, who were travelling in the Mustang, were leaving Shands at the University of Florida when they were hit. The vehicle spun out of control and hit a tree. Both of the Swigers were taken back to Shands at the University of Florida for treatment. Mr. Williams suffered a head trauma, although none of the injuries involved in the crash were considered to be life-threatening to any of the victims.
