
Traffic fatalities fell for the fourth consecutive year from 2008 to 2009-reaching historic lows in some areas.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles statistics show that traffic fatalities decreased from 2008 to 2009, falling overall by 14% from 2,983 to 2,563 statewide.
Some of the most dramatic declines include motorcycle deaths and teen driving fatalities. Motorcycle deaths decreased by almost a quarter (24.5%), falling from 532 to 402, respectively. Fatal crashes involving teen drivers and occupants fell by 20.7%, from 193 to 153.
The State Mileage Death Rate reached a historic low, dropping to 1.30 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2009.
Other decreases include: alcohol related fatalities (14.1%); bicycle deaths (15.3%); and pedestrian fatalities (4%).
