New Ally in Teen Driving Safety - Teens Themselves

Posted on May 03, 2011

A recent study shows teens may be their own biggest ally in the campaign for stricter graduated driver licensing, also known as "GDL."

While teen crashes are reduced in recent years, teenaged driving remains a public safety threat, and teens want stricter learning limits too.  Essentially, GDL includes: an extended learner's stage, more supervision, and less night time driving.

The Allstate Foundation's nationwide online poll of 1,383 teens, ages 15 to 18 years, in November 2010, showed teens are strongly in favor of stricter driving laws, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, and location.  Key survey findings include:

  1. GDL. About 74% of teens approved of GDL including, "a learner period starting at age 16, limits on late night driving and passenger limits for new drivers, prohibition of cell phones and texting, and 18 for a full, unrestricted license."
  2. Nighttime restrictions. Approximately 78% want night time driving restrictions, starting on or about 9pm to 10pm.
  3. Fewer passengers.  About 69% of teens want a limit on the number of teen passengers-to none or only one.
  4. A Ban on phones and texting. Overwhelmingly, 93% of teens want a texting ban, while 85% wanted a cell phone prohibition.

Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, killing approximately 4,000 teens each year.  Statistics show that teenagers crash four times as often as any other age group.
