April 20 marked the beginning of Teen Driver Safety Week. This nationwide campaign seeks to create awareness of the dangers involved with teen driving. According to the Sun Sentinel, teen drivers text more than adults, wear seat belts less often than adults, and speed on average more than adults, leading to more accidents and tragedies involving teenagers.
Since car accidents are the leading cause of deaths for teens from age 15-19 in the United States, this awareness is important. Cities all over the State of Florida and the United States have begun campaigns to bring light to issues concerning teen driving safety, including commercials containing statistical information regarding teen deaths and injuries associated with dangerous driving.
In Florida in 2007, accidents resulted in over 300 deaths for teens from age 15-19 and over 25,000 injuries, demonstrating the devastating affects dangerous driving can have in the lives of teens.
