From August 21 until September 7, 2009, the Florida Highway Patrol will hold a special safety campaign against those failing to move over whenever an emergency vehicle on the side of the road has its lights on. Campaign Move Over, Florida! It's the Law is held to remind drivers about the law: whenever an emergency vehicle has its lights on, on the side of the road, drivers must move over one lane away from the emergency vehicle or, if moving is not possible, they must slow down to 20 mph below the posted speed limit in the area. The amount of penalty for failing to move over or slow down is nearly $150.
When the lights are on, law enforcement officers and other emergency personnel already have to deal with an accident or problem on the road. Having numerous vehicles pass them at high speeds can be very distracting for fire department or medical personnel who may have to deal with serious accidents and victims with severe injuries. It can also create other accidents on the road: more than 150 law enforcement officers have been killed by passing drivers on the highways nationwide in the last decade.
Stay safe and keep the road a safer place. Move over, Florida!
