A motorcycle overturned on a Suwannee County road in early June 2009, throwing Live Oak woman, Stacey L. Holcomb, 40, to her death.
According to the FHP, Holcomb, a passenger on a motorcycle driven by Live Oak resident, Dennis E. Dewald, 47, was ejected when the motorcycle veered onto the east shoulder of CR 49. While the cause of the crash is unknown, it is certain that neither Holcomb nor Dewald were wearing helmets at the time the motorcycle lost control.
Shortly after the crash, the victims were flown to Shand's Hospital, where Holcomb was pronounced brain dead. Dewald was reportedly being treated for critical injuries. According to reports, criminal charges are still pending.
While it is legal for a driver 21 and older to "ride free" without a helmet, Florida law instead requires the motorcyclist carry Medical Payment insurance. For more information on this please see, can I "ride free" in Florida.
It is critical to note that Holcomb and Dewald's accident occurred at 4:00 pm. According to National Safety Commission statistics, approximately 22.5% of all motorcycle deaths occur between the hours of 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm-making the late afternoon commute the deadliest driving time for motorcyclists.
