A recent study done by the National Safety Commission showed that when driving in heavy traffic situations, the risk of heart attack increases significantly. The longer the person is exposed to the traffic situation, the higher the rate increases, especially after three hours of driving in the traffic.
These statistics not only apply to drivers of cars and trucks, but also include those riding in public transportation vehicles or riding along the road on their bicycle.
Traffic conditions, which lead to increased stressed levels, combined with other environmental factor, lead to higher incidents of heart attacks in drivers, and can be connected to the "fight and flight" instinct individuals have when driving in stressful situations. This physical change the body experiences can lead to high stress levels, which put pressure on the body and leads to a higher risk of heart attack or stroke.
The National Safety Commission has also followed up this study by looking at the effects diesel fumes have on drivers, showing that the higher the exposure to diesel fumes, the lower the level of protein production which prevents blood clots within the body, leading to a higher risk of heart attack and stroke.
