Hydroplaning Teen Causes 15-Car Pile-up on I-75

Leonard T. Myers, 16 years old of Alachua, caused a 15-car crash on I-75 when his vehicle hydroplaned during torrential downpour that dumped an inch of rain late September, 2010, according to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

The chain-reaction wreck, involving 26 people, occurred approximately half a mile north of the 39th Street exit in Gainesville, Fla., in the northbound lane. 

FHP reports there were no deaths associated with the crash.  Three motorists, including Myers, received serious injuries, and 13 people received minor injuries.

Crash reports state Myers' 4-door 2008 Nissan hydroplaned, spun, and came to rest in the west emergency lane, blocking northbound traffic.  Motorist, Kristin Lange, 23 of Lake City, stopped to help Myers, and her Toyota truck was struck by another vehicle. 

Another 13 vehicles attempted to take evasive action on the wet, slippery interstate, slamming into the cars ahead.  Traffic was blocked for about 6 hours.  FHP reports charges against Myers are pending.
