The Florida Senate passed a Bill to keep motorists traveling on a multilane road or highway to the right, when being overtaken from behind. The bill intends to reduce the number of aggressive driving cases caused by motorists driving too slow in the left-hand lane.
On April 6, 2011, Senate Bill 244, also known as the Highway Safety Act, passed with 37 Yeas to 1 Nay and amends Florida Statutes §316.083, governing overtaking and passing a vehicle.
Specifically, the Act directs motorists traveling in the left-hand lane on a road, street, or highway with two or more lanes to move right when being overtaken and passed by a car from the rear that is traveling at a higher rate of speed.
A similar bill is under review by the Florida House, H.B. 177. To be effective in October 2011, the House would need to pass the Act, as well as receive Governor Rick Scott's signature.
