Florida, Leader of the Pack in Motorcycle Education

Posted on Mar 01, 2011

The Sunshine State leads the pack in mandatory motorcycle basic training.

The National Safety Commission (NSC) congratulates Connecticut for requiring basic education for all new motorcyclists.  Prior to 2011, only 16 and 17 year olds were required to complete a safety course.  Now, all new Connecticut motorcyclists, regardless of age, must complete a mandatory skills course.

Florida passed a similar law in July 2008, requiring all new Florida motorcyclists, seeking a Florida motorcycle license to pass a basic, 15-hour training course. The course includes skills education on safety gear, law, turning, swerving, and more.

While the American Motorcycle Association (AMA) advocates for voluntary motorcycle education, as opposed to legislatively mandated training, it acknowledges the value of skills education in saving lives.

As a personal injury attorney in North Central Florida, I congratulate the Florida Legislature in requiring continued skills education for Florida bikers and leading the pack.

See the Florida Department of Motor Vehicle (FLDSMV) site, to sign up for a Florida safety motorcycle course, approved by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF).
