By June 2015, all interstate commercial trucks and buses will be required to install and use Electronic Onboard Recorders (EOBRs) to monitor truckers' hours of service and speed.
In April, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) passed the rule to crack down on drowsy driving and speeding-major factors in recent trucking crashes.
Truckers will automatically upload data at state inspection stations. According to the Transportation Department, installation of EOBRs may cost trucking companies as much as $2,500 per vehicle plus the monthly cost of monitoring. However, electronic monitoring will save about $2,000 in paperwork and an additional $750 in safety benefits.
These regulations comply with orders of the U.S. District Court of Appeals of the District of Colombia, based on a litigation history of truckers violating federal driving limits.
