Fatal Semi and Bus Accidents In Area

Recently, there have been a few fatalities due to a bus accident and a truck accident in the past 2 weeks in our area.

The Gainesville Sun reported that on Monday, Feb. 2. A couple from Branford, Anthony Jude Sommo and his wife Rhonda Sommo died in an accident with a bus off U.S. 129 in Suwannee. The couple was heading northbound on U.S. 129 in their 1999 Chevy Cavalier while Amos V. Miller was driving a 2006 MCI tour bus heading southbound. According to the crash report, the Cavalier went to make a left turn off U.S. 129 and headed right in the path of the bus. Miller, driving the bus, swerved towards the right to prevent hitting the Cavalier just as the Cavalier also went for a quick right trying to avoid the path of the bus.

 The bus's left front corner crashed into the Cavaliers left front corner and the Sommo couple was pronounced dead at the scene. Anthony Jude Sommo was 54 and Rhonda was 51.It was reported that the Sommo couple was not wearing their seat belts but Amos V. Miller was.

Another man died from a truck accident Monday Feb. 2 on Country Road 351. Michael R. Loose, 51, was heading south in front of a semi. According to the report he got in the right shoulder making room for a U- turn in order to head north. While he was sideways on the highway, the semi struck his pickup head on and flipped completely upside down. The truck still full of momentum rolled over the overturned pickup and landed with its front axel on the pickup truck. Loose was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the semi suffered minor injuries.
