DUI Manslaughter Suspect Extradited To Ocala

Posted on Feb 21, 2012

Last year, a two car accident in Weirsdale resulted in the death of one driver and serious injuries to the other driver and his passenger.  Last week, that driver was extradited to Ocala from where he is currently living in Connecticut to face charges of DUI manslaughter, DUI with injury to another, and two counts of DUI with property damage.  The judge set bail at $51,500 and warned the suspect that he is not allowed to operate a motor vehicle or drink alcohol while the case is pending.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the suspect was driving east in his 1992 pickup truck with his 16 year-old son on County Road 42 back in April 2011.  When rounding a curve, the truck crossed the yellow center line into the opposite lane and then collided head on with a 1996 Jeep Cherokee.  The driver of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect and his son were flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment.  A sample of the suspect’s blood was taken at the hospital and sent to a lab for testing.  The results showed traces of the drugs alprazolam and amphetamine in his system and, according to the FHP, marijuana was also detected.
