Binge drinking is common among young people, especially college students. The Centers for Desease Control and Prevention reported that those under 21 consume about 90% of alcohol through binge drinking.
Northern Kentucky University has recently released a study, which shows that the binge drinkers are more likely than the moderate or social drinkers to believe that they have adequate driving abilities when they actually do not. Binge drinkers lack an internal cue to be able to assess whether they've had too much too drink and whether they should drive. The study included 20 male and 20 female college students, both binge drinkers and non-binge drinkers. They were given enough alcohol to have blood alcohol content (BAC) equal to 0.08%. In all states it is illegal to drive with a BAC equal to or above that level. After performing several simulated driving tasks, the binge drinkers stated that they had the ability to drive safely, while the non-binge drinkers knew that their ability to drive was impaired.
The authors of the study asserted, however, that most college binge-drinkers will outgrow their wanting to binge drink.
