Bill for School Bus Stop Fails

The Bill that was raised to change the location of the Levy County bus stop where the accident killing Tiffany Poupard occurred last week failed and will not make it past the legislature level.

The bill, which has been taking shape by Gainesville state Republican Chuck Chestnut since last year when a semi truck hit a school bus in Marion County, was set to enforce a restriction on bus stops placed on highways. It would require school districts to move stops currently located on highways to be moved by 2011.

Transportation officials cited research finding that school buses are able to take on rear-end collisions safer than side collisions, which would increase if the buses were forced to enter back onto the road under this bill. Because of this research, the bill did not make it.
