Alcohol is the leading cause of traffic fatalities

Alcohol is a leading cause of traffic fatalities in the U.S. All 50 states, District of Columbia and Puerto Rico define driving under influence as having blood alcohol level at or over 0.08 percent. According to the National Highway Traffic Administration, 36 persons die in alcohol-related traffic crashes every day in this country. Nationally in 2007, 12,996 out of total 41,059 traffic fatalities were a result of alcohol-related (BAC ³ 0.08%) traffic crashes. In Florida, there were 890 alcohol-related fatalities out of total 3,214 traffic deaths in 2007. If current trend continues, 35,000 persons under age of 25 will die in crashes involving alcohol in the next ten years in the U.S.

The number of alcohol-related deaths is on the rise among the motorcyclists. Almost half of the motorcyclists who were under influence at the time of the fatal crash are over 40 years old.
