Risk Factors Teens Bring To The Road

In commemoration of Teen Driver Safety Week, a variety of groups have gotten together to create awareness for the problems of dangerous teen driving, which leads to the leading cause of death in teens ages 15-19 throughout the United States.

According to the CDC, there are a variety of risk factors that lead to increased injuries and deaths from car, truck and auto accidents and crashes, among teen drivers throughout the United States. Here are some of them.

1. Teens have the tendency to underestimate situations where dangerous conditions may exist or to recognize when a hazardous situation approaches.

2. Teens, as opposed to adults, are less likely to wear a seat belt and more likely to speed.

3. Alcohol is involved in more teen accidents than adult accidents, at all levels of alcohol consumption.

4. 75% of teen deaths in 2005 was caused in part because the teen driver was drinking and not wearing a seat belt when the collision occurred.

5. Teens that have just received their license have a higher risk of getting into accidents, especially in the first year they have their license.

6. The risk of accidents actually increases when teen drivers have teen passengers in the car. The more teens in the car, the higher the risk of accidents.

7. The risk of death for teens is 50% higher in males than females.
