3 Tips on How to Share the Road With Trucks From An Ocala Truck Accident Attorney

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, there have been more than 400,000 accidents involving trucks, which resulted in more than 5,300 deaths in recent years. Knowing how to share the road with trucks, especially large semis, is essential for your safety. 1. Don't cut off a truck!

It takes twice as long for a truck to stop or slow down than a car. If you cut in front of a truck and the driver is distracted or takes a few seconds to react, you put yourself in a dangerous situation because trucks do not have the same energy absorbing bumpers as cars. You also shorten their stopping distance in half. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, more than 60 percent of fatal truck crashes involve the front of trucks. If you need to get in front of a truck, make sure you can see the whole front part it in your rear-view mirror before switching lanes.

2. Don't tailgate!

Just how the fronts of trucks do not have the same energy absorbing bumpers as cars, neither do their backs, which can cause serious damage to you and your car in an accident. Therefore, leave enough room between your car and the truck in front of you in case the truck breaks abruptly or slows down. There could be accident or debris ahead, which you will not see if you're too close.

3. Stay away from blind spots!

Large semis are almost as large as your lane and sometimes triple the length of your car. Therefore, truck drivers have huge blind spots in front of them, behind them and on their sides. If you cannot see the driver in his or her side-view mirror, he or she cannot see you! They also have to react faster than other drivers because of their trucks' size and weight. If there is an emergency and the truck driver has to swerve, it is vital you are not in the driver's blind spot.

Lastly, be courteous and understand a truck driver's constraints!
