According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles' 2008 Florida Traffic Crash Statistics, in 2008, there were 346,610 motorized vehicle crashes in Florida at an average of 665 crashes per day including 4, 272 fatalities. In this article, Gainesville and Ocala accident attorney utilizes this information to help you have a safe 4th of July and every day on the road.

Independence Day weekend is here and though, it is not the deadliest of the major holiday weekends in Florida, the 96 hours of the 4th of July weekend does have more accidents and fatalities than an average day on the road in Florida. Many in North Florida will be hitting the roads due to the long weekend. Here are some simple safety reminders based on Florida's 2008 statistics, to help make your trip as safe as possible:

  1. Do not drink and drive. Nearly 40% of Florida's traffic fatalities were alcohol related in 2008.
  2. Buckle up and make sure your children are secured in age appropriate restraints. 60% of people killed in seat belt equipped vehicles were not wearing seat belts. 68.3% of children from birth to 17 killed were not using proper safety restraints.
  3. Be aware of the time of day. In 2008, Friday around 5 p.m. had the highest number of all types of crashes. Saturday and Sunday around 2 a.m. had the highest number of fatal crashes with Sunday evening around 7 p.m., the next deadliest.
  4. Parents, beware of your teenage or young driver. Drivers aged 15 to 19 had the highest rate of licensed drivers for being involved in a crash with 20 to 24 year olds, the highest rate of fatal crashes.
  5. Be aware of young drivers that have been drinking. Drivers 20 to 24 who had been drinking had the highest rate of being in a crash and the highest rate in fatal crashes.
