Children's Bike Helmets - 7 Things Parents Should Know:

A properly fitted bike helmet may reduce the risk of death or serious head injury by 85 percent or more. In this article, accident attorney, Jeffrey Meldon, discusses what parents should know before purchasing their child's bicycle helmet and gives other important information regarding children and helmets.

Not only are bike helmets required by Florida law for children under 16 years of age, wearing a helmet might save your child's life. A brain injury could have permanent consequences for your child's personality, mental and learning abilities, concentration, and aggressiveness. In short, protect your child's growing brain!

Here are 7 things a parent should know about their child's bike helmet:

  1. Fit your child's current head size. Your child should try the helmet on before buying it. A loose helmet that is too big likely won't stay on in a collision. Use padding according to the manufacturer's instructions to properly fit the helmet.
  2. Use only for Bicycling. A snug-fitting helmet may strangle or asphyxiate a child when used for activities other than bike riding. Never allow a child to wear a helmet on a playground, when playing outside, or climbing a tree.
  3. No aero tails. Never allow a small child or toddler to wear an "aero" shaped helmet because it can force their airway closed, if the child is placed in a bike seat or carrier.
  4. One year plus. Children under one year of age are too young to bike and wear a helmet. Consult the child's pediatrician.
  5. Discard when damaged. Replace the helmet when damaged or impacted in a collision. The foam inside the helmet may be compacted, so inspect the helmet carefully and often for signs of damage.
  6. Look for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) certification. Look for a sticker inside the helmet.
  7. Find the proper fit. Ensure the helmet is snug and does not rock side to side. Adjust the buckles, chin strap, and padding.
