Children's brains are still developing when they're young. Neurological damage from a head injury is long lasting and may not show up until years later.  For example, a child's frontal lobes (which control social interaction and interpersonal skills) do not develop until a child reaches adolescence. Similarly, injuries to the reading and writing areas in the brain probably won't show up until the child is school-aged.
