Q: What are the fines for speeding in an Ocala construction zone?

A:

According to Florida Statute §318.18(3)(d), the fine for exceeding the speed limit in a construction zone or work zone when: road workers are present, are operating equipment on the road, or are immediately adjacent to the road under construction is double the amount of a regular fine for speeding. The regular speeding fine schedule is as follows:

For speed exceeding the limit by:                             Fine: 

1-5 mph                                                                       Warning

6-9 mph                                                                       $25

10-14 mph                                                                   $100

15-19 mph                                                                   $150

20-29 mph                                                                   $175

30 mph and above                                                        $250

For example, if the speed limit in a construction zone is 35 mph, and you were driving 50 mph, 15 miles per hour over the speed limit, then instead of paying $150, you will be fined in the amount of $300.

If a driver decides to adjudicate the speeding offense in a construction zone and is found guilty, the judge, after a hearing, may impose a fine not exceeding $1000, require an offending driver attend a driver improvement classes, or both (Fla. Statute §318.14(5)).
