What are some ATV Safety Tips? Gainesville accident attorney offers help.

A: This is an important question in Florida with our many ATV riders. Here are some quick tips when riding an ATV in a responsible manner to minimize the risk of injury:

  • Travel only in areas open to ATV use, such as designated roads, trails, and other areas.
  • Minimize wheel spin.
  • When riding down a steep incline, avoid hugging the very outside of the path, especially on curves.
  • Slow down when sight lines are poor.
  • Cross streams only at designated points.
  • Comply with all signs and respect barriers.
  • Buddy up with two or three riders in case you have an accident or breakdown.  Designate meeting areas in case of separation.
  • Listening to headphones can make it difficult to hear or communicate with other recreationalists.  In some areas, it is illegal to operate ATVs with both ears covered.
  • Don’t mix riding with drugs or alcohol.

Besides the above tips, the key to ATV safety is responsible driving.  Always err on the side of caution when driving an ATV, no matter how experienced of a driver you may be.
