There is no sidewalk on certain parts of my street in Ocala. What are the rules for walking on the road in this case?

A:

As an accident attorney for Ocala and the surrounding areas I can give you the info on this:

  • While a pedestrian must legally walk on a sidewalk if it's available, where one is not available a pedestrian is allowed to walk on the road (but not on a highway or a freeway).
  • When there are no sidewalks, you have to walk as far to the left side of the road as possible, facing the oncoming traffic.
  • If you are riding a bicycle, you are not considered a pedestrian, and you must ride on the right side of the road, along with the traffic.

Be extra cautious when walking on the road: avoid walking at night when you might be less visible to the drivers, wear clothes with reflective material, and don't wear headphones.

For more information on how pedestrians can be safe and avoid one of the more deadly type of accidents (along with head-on collision, roll-over crashes, and bicycle accidents, here is an article I wrote;  Rules of the Road for Pedestrians in Florida;  What Every Walker Should Know To Be Safe and Legal.
