How Can I prevent a back-over accident? I want to protect my child. Ocala accident attorney answers.

A:

In a majority of cases, it's a family member who is responsible for backing over their child in the family's driveway or nearby the family home. The children in greatest danger are those age 5 and younger.  No one wants to think about this devastating possibility. As an Ocala accident attorney, I'd like to share the following safety tips:

  • 1. Always supervise your child when playing outside-in the front yard or anywhere in the vicinity of a roadway. When near a street, "hold-hands."
  • 2. Double check your child's location before starting the engine-can you see your child?
  • 3. If your child isn't immediately with you, is another adult supervising them?
  • 4. Walk around your car before backing out.
  • 5. Install a collision detector with an alarm or a rear-view camera. Even though cameras aren't yet standard, they're still for sale.
  • 6. Know your back-up blind zone. See where your vehicle falls on Consumer Report's "Best" and "Worst" lists.
  • 7. Teach your child not to play in the driveway, street, or anywhere near a car. Even "parked" cars can "move."
  • 8. Trim shrubbery and trees around the driveway and sidewalk to increase pedestrian and driver visibility.
  • 9. Pay extra attention around holidays, crises, schedule changes, or busy times, since you may be distracted.
