ATV vs. UTV: Whats the Difference? Gainesville accident attorney explains

A: Many people lump off-road vehicles into the category of ATVs.  While this label is convenient and generally accepted, there are two basic types: ATV and UTV.

ATV: Stands for all terrain vehicles.
These vehicles are usually three and four wheelers and are mainly used for recreational purposes.  ATVs generally do not have windshields or roofs.  They are capable of making sharp, quick turns and can travel at higher speeds than UTVs.

UTV: Stands for utility terrain vehicle.
Basically, cross an ATV with a pickup truck and you get an UTV.  Also referred to as utility vehicles, UTVs are better equipped for handling heavy work loads.  They have more space for hauling tools as well as expanded seating for passengers.  UTVs are generally both taller and wider than ATVs and have windshields and roofs.  They are also steadier, primarily because they do not make tight, wide turns like ATVs.

When used safely and properly, both ATVs and UTVs are a great source for recreation as well as getting jobs and chores done.
