Gainesville and Ocala Accident Attorney urges us to honor victims of traffic crashes.

Traffic crashes are a threat to global, public health and safety.

World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (World Day) is an internationally recognized day to honor those killed in traffic accidents worldwide.

World Day recognizes the increasing epidemic of car crashes that especially claims the lives of children and young adults:

  • Worldwide, roadside wrecks are the leading cause of death for persons ages 10 to 24 years.
  • Globally, about 1.3 million people die and another 20 to 50 million are injured in car crashes annually.
  • In the United States, traffic crashes are the number one killer of people ages 5 to 34.

As an auto accident attorney, I have seen the devastation car crashes cause in North Central Florida and beyond.  This year, I join the millions of families and friends who lost loved ones in honoring traffic victims on World Day, November 21, 2010. I urge you too as well.

World Day is marked by worldwide ceremonies of reflection, laying of flowers, and "lights of hope" between 6 pm to 8 pm to remember the dead and injured.

The United Nations officially recognized World Day in 2005, which originated in the United Kingdom in 1993. The U.S. first honed World Day in 2009.

Worldwide, car wrecks not only cause senseless, preventable deaths, but cost $100 billion dollars to low and middle-income countries, as estimated by the World Bank.  Road injuries cost countries 1% to 2% of their gross national product, according to the World Health Organization.
