According to TeenDriverSource.org, motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of fatalities for adolescents ages 16-25. In fact, adolescents are four times more likely to be involved in fatal crashes than adult drivers (ages 26-65). In addition, specific characteristics of teenagers have been shown to exacerbate the problem of dangerous driving including, but obviously not limited to, inexperience, speed, loud music, cell-phones, alcohol, other drugs, drowsiness, and night driving.
As an example, this past Thursday, November 17, 2011, a 23 year old resident of Ocala, FL, snapped a utility pole in half while driving intoxicated on Northwest 70th Avenue Road and Northwest 35th Street. After failing a field sobriety test, the young driver was measured to have a .189 BAC, which is well over the legal limit. Luckily, the young man was not seriously injured and he did not injure any others in the crash.
National Teen Driver Safety Week was trying to bring awareness to our national in an effort to reduce the amount of stories like the one above. As an Ocala accident attorney, I support any and all efforts to keep our roads safe for not just ourselves, but for those around us as well.
The state of Florida has made strides in keeping our roads safe by implementing one of the nation's first Graduated Driver Licensing programs. Starting at the age of 15, a teenager goes through the process of having first a Learner's Permit, then an Intermediate License, and eventually a Full License. Each step of the way, the teenager is subjected to different restrictions on who must be in the car with them while driving and times during which they are allowed to drive. At the age of 18, the teenager is awarded a full license without restrictions.
