Not only is National Tire Safety Week observed in June, it's also the perfect month to check tire pressure-before hitting the road for summer travel.
Summertime heat may cause old, under-inflated tires to be especially susceptible to heat stress, contributing to catastrophic tire failure. As an experienced auto accident attorney in North Central Florida, I urge motorists to beat the heat and proactively check tire inflation to avoid disaster.
An estimated 85 percent of motorists do not know how to properly inflate tires. Under-inflated tires are hazardous because they generate heat inside the tire, which may cause damage leading to tire failure.
While an improperly maintained or under-inflated tire may cause an accident at any time during the year, tires are especially vulnerable to summertime heat. Summer is often a time for extended vacation travel, when families overload their car, exerting additional stress to the tires.
Experts recommend checking tire pressure and general health every month and before a long drive. Remember, it's impossible to know if a tire is underinflated just by looking at it. If it actually looks underinflated, it is way underinflated. (Rubber Manufacturer's Association (RMA) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA))
Tire inflation may also help families save at the pump. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that properly inflated tires may improve fuel economy by 3.3 percent, saving up to 12 cents per gallon.
If you're scrambling to check your tires, you can ride easy after checking out my quick guide on how to properly inflate your tires.
