It's 5:05. You have just left a busy day at work and you are now stuck in traffic. You have a million things to do tonight. First on the list is making dinner, followed closely by cleaning the house, getting ready for your in-laws to come this weekend, and helping the kids with their homework. You have no idea how you're going to get this all done, especially with traffic being so bad. You are stressed enough and then someone cuts you off. You get upset and just want to get home.
As an auto accident lawyer and driver, I suggest.....Breathe! Traffic is a fact of life for all of us. However, it can also lead to a higher risk of heart attack and stroke. A study recently done by the National Safety Commission found that the stress levels that result from sitting in heavy and frustrating traffic situations can lead to an increased risk of having a heart attack.
The Commission recommends some steps to help reduce your level of stress when driving to counteract your stress level. First, turn on the air in your car and close the windows. This will reduce the level of harmful fumes from entering your car and affecting your body in negative ways. The constant airflow will also help your stress level.
Second, acknowledge that traffic can lead to stressful situations and try not to succumb to the pressures of the road. Take a deep breath and go with the flow. You know that you will get to your destination eventually.
Third, know the warning signs of heart attacks and get regular check-ups from your doctor. Regardless of the level of stress in your life, it is always a good idea to know the signs and know that your body is in good shape.
