Tragically, Beth J. Rose, 48, became the 48th traffic fatality of 2010 in Marion County after a single-car rollover accident in Reddick earlier this summer.
Rollover crashes are the most deadly and violent of all auto accidents. As an experienced Gainesville accident attorney, I urge drivers to inform themselves and loved ones about the causes and ways to avoid tragic rollovers during the Florida summer driving season.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Rose's 2-door 1994 Mercedes Benz was travelling north on C.R. 225A when it rotated counterclockwise, striking a concrete culvert. Rose's car rolled over at least once, ejecting its driver.
Rose failed to wear a seatbelt and was crushed under her vehicle. She later died after extensive brain damage and a medically induced coma.
In this case, Rose was driving on a rural road where the speed limit was likely more than 55 mph-all typical characteristics of rollovers. While the low base of Rose's car does not fit the typical profile of a tall truck or SUV with a high center of gravity, it appears the car was "tripped" by a culvert-a mechanism common to 95% of rollovers. What makes this single-vehicle crash particularly deadly is the failure to wear a seatbelt, which makes it more likely the occupant, will be ejected and pinned.
