Ride Safe this Summer

While the Florida summer is perfect for cruising on your bike, keep safety in mind, especially when "riding free" in the heat. As an experienced accident attorney with nearly 38 years of experience, representing pople injured in motorcycle crashes, I have seen the tragic consequences of the legislature's repeal of the Florida helmet law in 2000.

Statistics show that the number of motorcyclists killed in crashes has drastically increased from 158 deaths in 1998 to 517 fatalities in 2007. In fact, motorcycle accidents accounted for 17.1% of all vehicle-related deaths in 2007.

While a helmet is not required for adult motorcyclists, I do recommend you wear one.  It is interesting to note that Florida's apparent rise in motorcycle fatalities mirrors a national trend in rider deaths. One study shows that the number of riders killed nationwide in motorcycle accidents rose 50% between 1997 and 2001-which some explain by less stringent helmet laws for adult riders in Florida and neighboring states.

While motorcyclists who are 21 years of age and older can choose to "ride free," it is even more critical to follow these simple safety tips when cruising this summer. The National Safety Commission recommends that riders brush up on their riding skills when dusting off their bike for the summer riding season.
