What costs the U.S. economy at least $60 billion each year?
Traumatic Brain Injury, also known as TBI (2000). TBI may be caused by a forceful impact to the head during a motor vehicle accident, often with life-long consequences and disability. Traffic crashes cause approximately 17.3% of TBI cases each year.
Some estimate a severe TBI may carry a lifetime cost of care to range from $600,000 to $1.8 million. In addition to medical care, TBI victims may require neuro-behavioral services, vocational rehabilitation, and a constant in-home caregiver, as well as respite care for the caregiver.
Severe TBI may place tremendous financial pressure on a household when a victim is no longer able to care for them self or is unable to maintain a job due to difficulty with basic cognitive function.
Children are especially at risk for TBI and potentially catastrophic lifetime costs. According to the CDC, children ages 0-4 and 15-19 are at greatest risk for TBI. Annually, about 62,000 pediatric cases of TBI require hospitalization from motor vehicle accidents and other causes. The effects of TBI are especially costly to immature brains in the process of developing.
As an experienced car accident attorney in Gainesville and North Central Florida, I urge Florida motorists to be aware of the costs of TBI from motor vehicle accidents. TBI education is the first step in prevention.
