Automobile accidents involving bicycles or other two wheeled vehicles frequently result in tragedy. Such was the case in Suwannee County.
During the early morning hours of 19 September 2011, the driver of a 2007 Ford F-150 collided with a bicyclist on U.S. 129 approximately a quarter mile south of County Road 132. According to the accident report written by the Florida Highway Patrol, the bicyclist was pedaling south in the southbound lane of U.S. 129 around 6:45 in the morning when it was rear-ended by the F-150. The bicyclist was immediately thrown from the bike upon impact and pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
The accident report stated that the collision occurred because the driver of the F-150 did not see the approaching bicycle until it was too late. The report further states that the accident occurred due to a combination of factors including fog and smoke in the area, the sun had not yet risen, and the bicycle did not have any type of lighting.
My heart goes out to all involved in the tragic accident. As a Gainesville accident attorney I would like to remind Floridians to pay extra attention in foggy conditions and cyclists to take this time to review and obey Florida's laws regulating bicycle usage.
