Florida Teenage Safe Driving Awareness...parents and teens need to talk about these things... Part 2

Governor Charlie Crist's designation of April 20 to 25, 2009, as Teenage Safe Driving Week in Florida, in anticipation of prom and grad night partying, is a perfect excuse for parents to discuss safe driving tips with teenagers and young adults. As a car crash lawyer in Gainesville and a father, here are some more ideas and information you should talk about:

First, know the facts-teens and young adults are the most high risk category of drivers in Florida.

  • Florida crash reports indicate that drivers ages 15 to 19 years old are more likely than any other age group to be involved in a motor vehicle accident.
  • Young adult drivers, ages 20 to 24 years, have the highest fatality rates of those involved in car accidents.
  • Drivers 18 years old have the overall highest rate of motor vehicle crashes-including deadly crashes. http://www.flhsmv.gov/hsmvdocs/CS2006.pdf

Second, Prevention is key to saving lives-talk with your teen or young adult as they rev up for prom night and graduation partying.

  • Create an itinerary with your teen about festivity plans and discuss it with the other parents in person or on the phone.
  • Ensure that there are responsible parents to chaperone pre and post party festivities as well as at the actual event, contacting them in person is the best idea.
  • Make sure that your teen will be riding with friends who have a zero tolerance alcohol policy and know not get into a car with someone that has been drinking.
  • Texting is a great way to stay in touch during the night without being too intrusive or causing embarrassment to your teen.
  • Create a code in case your teen needs help, like "feeling sick" or "family emergency."
  • Make sure your teen knows it is OK for them to call home at anytime to be picked up, without fear of punishment.
