*FHP (*347) An Important Cell Number to Remember All Year Round – Why?
Operation Safe Driver Week. This continent-wide program sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) aim is to go after distracted drivers.
This week there will be stepped-up law enforcement officers on the road looking for unsafe driving behaviors especially in regions where the most commercial motor vehicle crashes occur.
According to the CVSA, nearly 9 out of 10 fatal accidents in North America are caused by unsafe driving such as speeding, aggressive driving, and distracted driving.
Locally, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is also participating in Operation Safe Driver this week looking for unsafe driving behaviors in commercial and non-commercial vehicles and performing commercial vehicle driver safety inspections.
The FHP are especially on the lookout for unsafe driving around large trucks. The FHP routinely inspects large trucks, not just during this week, and states, “In 2011, FHP conducted more than 110,000 commercial vehicle inspections placing more than 19,000 vehicles and drivers out of service for critical safety violations.”
Public education and media events aimed at increasing public awareness of the dangers of aggressive driving and distracted driving, are another aspect of this safety week.
