Even though they're still in high school, they party, and then they drive.
According to one study, 30% of high school seniors reported driving after using alcohol or other illicit drugs or riding with a driver who had-at least once in the two weeks prior.
"Driving under the influence" (DUI) among teens is widespread-and it doesn't just mean alcohol.
As a Gainesville automobile accident attorney, DUI lawyer, and a parent, I've seen the tragic effects of impaired driving on teen lives. From parent to parent, I urge you to talk with your teen about drugged driving.
Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, 15 to 20 years old, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. "Drugged driving" is a major public safety concern and contributing factor.
"Drugged driving" means using prescription, illicit, or over-the-counter drugs before taking the wheel. When it comes to the teen drug of choice, marijuana and then prescription medications are the most commonly abused, according to the 2007 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
Drugs affect the brain and central nervous system, resulting in possible disorientation, loss of balance, drowsiness, memory loss, or "sleep driving." Drugs are especially dangerous for young drivers when mixed with alcohol.
My advice, talk with your teen. Studies show that teens who reported having conversations with their parents about alcohol and drugs were more likely to stay drug-free.
