Imagine driving home after dark on a Friday or Saturday evening and 16%--or 1 in 6--cars you pass are driven by a "drugged driver."
While drunk driving has decreased, "drugged driving" is on the rise and a major public safety concern. In a nationwide survey, drugs were present about 7 times as often as alcohol among nighttime weekend drivers.
As an experienced accident attorney in Gainesville, Florida, I've seen the devastating effects of "drugged" and drunk driving. I join the National Safety Commission (NSC) in reminding Florida drivers that driving under the influence (DUI) doesn't only mean alcohol.
"Drugged driving" means taking the wheel, while under the influence of any illicit, prescription, or over-the-counter drug. The problem is more serious than you may think.
It is estimated that 20% of all crashes are attributable to driving while "drugged." Plus, more than 16% of weekend, nighttime drivers tested positive for illegal, prescription, or over-the-counter medication, according to a 2007 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration survey.
A study by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) in 2008, 10 million people-or 4% of the population-reported driving under the influence of illicit drugs.
Drugs affect the brain and central nervous system, resulting in possible disorientation, drowsiness, memory loss, or "sleep driving." Drugs are especially dangerous for drivers when mixed with alcohol.
