Residents of the City of Taramac, FL can rest easier knowing that their City Commisioners are proposing legislation with safety in mind. The new ordinance requires dog owners to register their aggressive animal with the City upon attacking another human or animal. Once registered, the dog owner must carry $500,000 in liability insurance to provide relief to potential victims of attack. As Taramac's former legislation only applied to pit-bulls, the proposed legislation is beneficial to society because it requires all aggressive animals to be insured, regardless of breed.
As an experienced Personal Injury lawyer in Gainesville that has helped many dog bite victims, I support the City of Tamarac's decision to propose legislation that hopes to ensure that aggressive dog owners carry liability insurance. It is unfortunate that most of the time the victims of dog bites are forced to provide for themselves because the dog owner did not carry liability insurance. Once a dog has shown its aggressive nature through one attack, the owner should be required to carry liability insurance in case their dog has further aggressive incidents. Under the proposed legislation, the City of Taramac will be able to identify aggressive dogs and ensure that their owners carry liability insurance. Thus, this will likely reduce the amount of uncompensated injured victims, which is a fair compromise for both dog owners and their neighbors.
In the meantime, neighbors of aggressive dog owners should be informed of what to do if attacked by a dog. And, as for dog owners, remember that in Florida you are strictly liable for your dog's attacks.
