Despite Tragedy - Facts Show, Seatbelts Do Save Lives.

A 67-year-old man was ejected out of his car while apparently wearing a seatbelt in an afternoon crash Saturday in Fellowship, Fla.  The Ocala Star Banner reported that Stuart D. Kushner, of Gainesville, died after his SUV overturned in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 27.

Three others in the SUV who reportedly were also wearing seatbelts, were transported to area hospitals and were reported in stable condition. Our hearts go out to the Kushner family for their loss and tragedy.

Despite stories such as this, as an accident attorney, I would like to say that seatbelts are effective and do save lives.  According to a James Madison University report, serious injuries are decreased by 50% by properly buckling up and of the thousands of people who die in motor vehicle crashes 60% to 70% would have been saved if they wore seat belts.

However, there is the occasional story you hear from a friend or on the news about seatbelts malfunctioning, or being installed incorrectly, or, in some cases, resulting in death, in addition, they are not 100% effective, even when used and installed properly.   However, when worn and installed properly, the data is in and it clearly shows that seatbelts are one of the most effective safety precautions motorists and passengers can take!  In addition, it is the law. 

Please, make sure to always buckle up!

Remember, motorists can increase safety belt usage by example and verbal reminders. Nine out of 10 people buckle up when asked, according to the James Madison University study.
